How It Works

Using the Steve Spangler Science Club as a homeschooling curriculum is designed to be intuitive and user-friendly. Here is a detailed outline of how it works:

  • Daily and Weekly Schedule: It is recommended to dedicate about 30-45 minutes per day, 2-3 times a week, to work on the experiments and related activities.

  • Activities: Each kit includes multiple experiments that can be spread out over the month. Activities range from simple chemical reactions to more complex engineering challenges.

  • Preparation: The kits are mostly "open and go," with minimal preparation required. Parents need to read through the instructions and gather any common household items that might be needed.

  • Instructional Support: The program includes detailed guides and online video tutorials to ensure that both parents and students understand the scientific principles behind each experiment.

  • Independence: The activities are designed to be parent-led but encourage increasing independence as students become more familiar with the scientific process .

Educational Concepts It Teaches

The Steve Spangler Science Club covers a broad range of educational concepts, including but not limited to:

  • Basic principles of chemistry (e.g., reactions, states of matter)

  • Physics concepts (e.g., force, motion, energy)

  • Earth science (e.g., weather, geology)

  • Biology (e.g., plant and animal science)

  • Engineering and design thinking

  • Scientific method and inquiry

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills

What’s Good About It

Users consistently praise the Steve Spangler Science Club for its ability to make science fun and engaging. Parents and students love the hands-on nature of the experiments, which help bring abstract scientific concepts to life. The all-inclusive kits save time and effort, as there is no need to purchase additional materials. The detailed guides and video tutorials are highly appreciated for providing clear and easy-to-follow instructions, making it accessible even for parents with limited science backgrounds. Additionally, the emphasis on real-world applications and critical thinking skills is seen as a significant advantage, helping students understand the relevance of science in their daily lives .

What Could Be Improved

Despite its many strengths, there are areas where the Steve Spangler Science Club could improve. Some users have mentioned that the kits can be a bit pricey, especially for families on a tight budget. While the quality of materials is generally high, there have been occasional reports of missing or damaged items, which can disrupt the learning experience. Another point of criticism is the need for more advanced experiments for older or more experienced students. Adding more challenging projects could help keep these students engaged and continuously learning .

Advice from Parents on How to Get the Most Out of It

Parents who have used the Steve Spangler Science Club recommend several strategies to maximize its benefits:

  1. Consistency: Set a regular schedule for science activities to build a routine and maintain momentum.

  2. Supplementary Resources: Use additional resources like library books or educational websites to expand on the topics covered in the kits.

  3. Parental Involvement: Stay actively involved in the experiments, especially in the beginning, to guide and support your child's learning.

  4. Documentation: Keep a science journal to document experiments, observations, and conclusions. This practice helps reinforce learning and develop scientific thinking.

  5. Community Engagement: Join online communities or forums related to the Steve Spangler Science Club to share experiences, get tips, and seek advice from other parents and educators .

Who It’s an Ideal Fit For

The Steve Spangler Science Club is an excellent fit for families looking for a hands-on, engaging science curriculum that can be easily integrated into their homeschooling routine. It is particularly well-suited for elementary and middle school students who thrive on interactive learning and enjoy experimenting. Parents who appreciate well-organized and ready-to-use educational materials will find this program highly convenient. Additionally, families who value the importance of critical thinking and real-world applications in science education will benefit significantly from this curriculum .

Who It’s Probably Not a Fit For

This program may not be the best fit for families on a very tight budget, as the subscription costs can add up over time. Additionally, it might not meet the needs of high school students or those seeking more advanced scientific content, as the experiments are primarily geared towards younger learners. Families who prefer a more traditional, textbook-based approach to science education may also find the hands-on, experimental nature of the Steve Spangler Science Club less appealing .

Grades

The Steve Spangler Science Club is designed primarily for students in grades K-8. The experiments and activities are tailored to be age-appropriate for this range, providing a solid foundation in scientific principles and practices .

Cost

The cost of the Steve Spangler Science Club subscription varies depending on the plan selected. The prices typically range from $19.99 to $29.99 per month, with discounts available for longer subscription commitments. There are often promotions and special offers that can help reduce the overall cost .

Manisha Snoyer (co-founder of Modulo)

For the last 20 years, I’ve taught over 2000 children in 3 countries (of all socio-economic backgrounds). I pioneered an English language program in a conflict region in the Middle East. I’ve worked as a bilingual public school teacher at some of the highest and lowest performing public schools and in all five boroughs of NYC. I’ve tutored 18 subjects in three languages to some of the wealthiest families in NYC, San Francisco and Paris to make up for shortcomings in private schools they were paying up to $60,000 a year to attend.

Since 2015, I’ve helped hundreds of parents start microschools (way before this was a household buzzword). I founded CottageClass, the first marketplace for microschools and learning pods that was part of the Techstars 2018 class. In 2019, I created a virtual learning program to help families through the pandemic, a free online math tutoring program (masteryhour.org), and schoolclosures.org, a hotline developed in collaboration with Twilio and 80 other partners including Khan Academy, Revolution Foods and the Crisis Text Line, that served 100,000 families impacted by school closures.

I’ve climbed trees with children in forest schools in San Francisco, and tested new digital apps with kids in seven countries.

I’ve also coached dozens of families at different stages in their homeschooling journey. Most recently, I founded Modulo with homeschooling dad, best-selling author and tech entrepreneur Eric Ries, to help families curate their children’s education, social and childcare experiences drawing from a diverse array of in-person and online resources.

During the last three years, I’ve devoted much of my time to reviewing and testing secular homeschooling curriculum and other resource. I’ve spent the last three years talking to thousands of secular homeschooling families, and poring over tens of thousands of secular curriculum reviews and testing physical curriculum and digital apps for with hundreds of students to find the highest quality, most engaging, personalized learning materials for every type of learner.

I’ve spoken about homeschooling and modular learning at multiple venues including SXSW EDU, NY Tech Meetup, and on the LiberatedEd podcast.

In 2022, Modulo was one of 8 organizations who were awarded the Bridge Grant from the Vela Education Fund to expand access to homeschooling and modular learning to under-resourced communities.

My experience in education and homeschooling has led me to believe that there is no perfect education for every child, but families have an extraordinary amount of wisdom they can apply to building the perfect education for their individual child.

My goal with Modulo is to make it possible for any family to easily build a customized education that their child will love, and that will empower the whole family to thrive, taking into account, social, emotional and academic needs.

I love to answer questions from parents and receive feedback on how we can improve Modulo, so feel free to reach out anytime! I personally answer all the questions and comments readers leave on my blogs.

In my free time, I like hiking, traveling the world, tasting ceremonial grade matcha, enjoying dark chocolate.

I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Brandeis University with highest honors, with a double degree in French Literature and American Studies and minors in Environmental Studies and Peace & Conflict Studies.

And I love to learn!
