Magic Forest Academy

Magic Forest Academy emerged as a secular, nature-based educational resource aimed at filling gaps identified in other programs—specifically, those that were religious, too costly, or inflexible for diverse family needs. Although the detailed background of the founder isn't widely documented, the philosophy behind Magic Forest Academy focuses on creating accessible, engaging, and versatile educational content that harnesses the thematic richness of nature, making it stand out from more rigid or narrowly focused curricula (Modulo).

Special Accomplishments: Magic Forest Academy is notable for its comprehensive curriculum that integrates various subjects with a nature-based approach, fostering appreciation and understanding of the natural world. The curriculum's format and flexibility have made it popular among homeschooling families, though specific awards or recognitions are not mentioned in the available resources (Modulo) (TheHomeSchoolMom).

Grades Covered: PreK-6th grades. Stage one is for PreK-1st and Stage 2 for 2nd-6th.

Cost: The financial investment varies based on the materials chosen. For instance, Stage 2 printed books cost $42.95 per season or $171.80 for the year, whereas the full-year digital bundle is priced at $100 (Modulo).

Key Features: Magic Forest Academy distinguishes itself with its secular and nature-focused curriculum that spans reading, math, science, arts, crafts, and more. The program emphasizes hands-on learning without the need for screens, promoting real-world engagement and activity-driven education (Modulo) (TheHomeSchoolMom).

What Makes It Special: Unique to Magic Forest Academy is its integration of environmental education with core academic subjects, facilitated through child-led and adaptable unit studies that align with the seasons. This approach not only educates but also instills a lasting respect and love for nature (Modulo) (Modulo).

How It Works: The curriculum is structured around weekly themes, with each week focusing on a different nature topic. Families can adapt the pace and depth of study according to their needs, making the program highly flexible and customizable (Modulo) (Modulo).

How to Get Started: Starting with Magic Forest Academy involves selecting either a single book or a seasonal bundle to suit the child's interests and the family’s educational goals. The curriculum is designed to be inclusive, allowing for integration with other educational resources or standalone use (Modulo).

Educational Content: The curriculum covers a wide array of subjects through its nature-based themes:

  • Reading and literature

  • Mathematical concepts

  • Scientific inquiry and experiments

  • Arts and crafts

  • Cultural studies and geography

  • Nature journaling and history

Each unit also suggests field trips and practical activities like recipes, making learning interactive and multidimensional (SEA Homeschoolers).

Pros: Users appreciate the curriculum’s thoroughness, creativity, and the broad spectrum of activities provided, which cater to different ages and learning preferences. Its affordability and flexibility also receive high marks from homeschooling parents (Modulo).

Cons: While Magic Forest Academy is celebrated for its flexibility, some parents may find the lack of structured progression in difficulty and the relatively open-ended nature of activities less rigorous than traditional curricula (Modulo).

Parental Advice: Parents recommend starting with topics of interest to the child to foster engagement and gradually expanding to the broader curriculum offerings to maintain enthusiasm and educational breadth (Modulo).

Ideal Fit: This curriculum is ideal for families seeking an interdisciplinary, hands-on educational approach that deeply integrates nature with learning. It's particularly suitable for those who prefer a flexible learning schedule and are comfortable guiding and participating in their child's education (Modulo).

Not a Fit For: Families looking for a highly structured, traditional educational framework with standardized assessments might find Magic Forest Academy less aligned with their needs due to its emphasis on exploratory and child-led learning (Modulo).

Ways to Get It: Magic Forest Academy materials can be purchased directly from their website, offering both printed and electronic formats of their curriculum to cater to different preferences for learning accessibility (SEA Homeschoolers).

Manisha Snoyer (co-founder of Modulo)

For the last 20 years, I’ve taught over 2000 children in 3 countries (of all socio-economic backgrounds). I pioneered an English language program in a conflict region in the Middle East. I’ve worked as a bilingual public school teacher at some of the highest and lowest performing public schools and in all five boroughs of NYC. I’ve tutored 18 subjects in three languages to some of the wealthiest families in NYC, San Francisco and Paris to make up for shortcomings in private schools they were paying up to $60,000 a year to attend.

Since 2015, I’ve helped hundreds of parents start microschools (way before this was a household buzzword). I founded CottageClass, the first marketplace for microschools and learning pods that was part of the Techstars 2018 class. In 2019, I created a virtual learning program to help families through the pandemic, a free online math tutoring program (masteryhour.org), and schoolclosures.org, a hotline developed in collaboration with Twilio and 80 other partners including Khan Academy, Revolution Foods and the Crisis Text Line, that served 100,000 families impacted by school closures.

I’ve climbed trees with children in forest schools in San Francisco, and tested new digital apps with kids in seven countries.

I’ve also coached dozens of families at different stages in their homeschooling journey. Most recently, I founded Modulo with homeschooling dad, best-selling author and tech entrepreneur Eric Ries, to help families curate their children’s education, social and childcare experiences drawing from a diverse array of in-person and online resources.

During the last three years, I’ve devoted much of my time to reviewing and testing secular homeschooling curriculum and other resource. I’ve spent the last three years talking to thousands of secular homeschooling families, and poring over tens of thousands of secular curriculum reviews and testing physical curriculum and digital apps for with hundreds of students to find the highest quality, most engaging, personalized learning materials for every type of learner.

I’ve spoken about homeschooling and modular learning at multiple venues including SXSW EDU, NY Tech Meetup, and on the LiberatedEd podcast.

In 2022, Modulo was one of 8 organizations who were awarded the Bridge Grant from the Vela Education Fund to expand access to homeschooling and modular learning to under-resourced communities.

My experience in education and homeschooling has led me to believe that there is no perfect education for every child, but families have an extraordinary amount of wisdom they can apply to building the perfect education for their individual child.

My goal with Modulo is to make it possible for any family to easily build a customized education that their child will love, and that will empower the whole family to thrive, taking into account, social, emotional and academic needs.

I love to answer questions from parents and receive feedback on how we can improve Modulo, so feel free to reach out anytime! I personally answer all the questions and comments readers leave on my blogs.

In my free time, I like hiking, traveling the world, tasting ceremonial grade matcha, enjoying dark chocolate.

I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Brandeis University with highest honors, with a double degree in French Literature and American Studies and minors in Environmental Studies and Peace & Conflict Studies.

And I love to learn!
